Michael has always enjoyed using a camera. His first serious camera was a Yashica twin lens reflex camera. As an art student in the late sixties in London, U K, he mingled with luminaries such as Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger, and used it to shoot their groupies and his girlfriends who were often heading for modeling careers in fashionable Carnaby Street. Arriving in Vancouver at the height of the Hippie era, he shot the “be - ins” of the flower children in Stanley Park and the Rock Festival in Aldergrove. Then, in the early 70’s he purchased an Olympus Om 1, it has been a trusted and faithful tool ever since, recording key events in most of his family’s and friends lives.
In the mid nineties, as an art instructor for SD # 45 West Vancouver, Michael was provided with the facilities and resources to pioneer the integration of technology into the B.C. senior art program. He developed courses in computer art and design, digital photography, and required his students to maintain digital portfolios of their work.
In 2004, he used a 6mp Nikon D70 to shoot the “ 2005, Back the Bluffs Calendar.” that was produced with help of local residents wanting to raise funds to fight the BC Government’s decision to blast a highway through the sensitive Eagleridge Bluffs and Wetlands eco - system, above Horseshoe Bay. The making of the Calendar was featured in the documentary film “Naked” produced by independent filmmaker Mary Bissell, and has been aired several times on CBC.
His latest camera is a Nikon D 80. When coupled with high quality lenses, it is a superb camera for photographing people. By taking the time to develop a connection with his subjects, Michael captures their inner light, their uniqueness, and spirit.
Michael recently traveled to India. On returning, he exhibited photographs from his trip that are viewable in the Travel Gallery.
